Model reviewed: 161DGPros: Easy to adjust, easy to clean, good lookingCons: Locks up at fine setting (needs cleaning after each use), inconsistent grind size at medium to coarse settingMy family owns a German made coffee mill for two generations and it still works fine. It is an Eastern Germany brand. Now my parents own it, and I wanted the same quality thing for myself. I was making my mind between Peugeot and Zassenhaus, and finally picked the 161DG model as it has nice 'old world' looks to it. Not the old world quality as it turned out.When set to medium to coarse grind, the grind size is inconsistent. And when set to fine grind, the mill tend to lock itself up I don't know why. My old German mill required me to turn the nut clockwise for finer grind, holding the moving part from going down. Zassenhaus has it reversed. The nut is to be turned counter clockwise for finer grind. This sound wise as the nut can only undo itself towards coarser setting from turning the handle. And the settings nut is VERY loose. In reality however the first 3-5 teaspoons of coffee beans is no issue at fine grind setting. And then the mill locks to the super fine setting when nothing comes out off it. And it locks the nut, too. The setting nut becomes stuck and very tricky to unlock so that it could finally be turned clockwise towards more coarse grind. Then after the while I have to repeat the process. Up to the point when the mill gets so clotted up that nothing comes out of it even on the most coarse setting. I have to thoroughly clean it in order to be able to use it again. With some luck I can manage to set the mill to fine enough setting when it operates without locking up all the time, at least when being fed no more that 3 beans at a time. But all in all this is very frustrating.I wish I have purchased the old Zassenhaus mill off Ebay for the same buck. Or maybe going with the turkish mill model. I have no idea what happened to what used to be a reputable brand. I know they went under bankruptcy some time ago. Do they outsource it to India or China? The was no indication of such a thing on a box. In fact, there was no indication of where the thing was actually manufactured, just their german UPS code. In any case, I would stay away from Zassenhaus coffee mills. I also ordered Zassenhaus pepper mills along with 161DG coffee mill, and those are perfectly fine. But this is another story.Update: Just discovered a German forum thread that describes exactly my problem in more detail. Every single word apply. Please read the original thread here: [...]Clearly, I am not the only one affected by poor quality of Zassenhaus coffee mills. The author of the post finally managed to align the burrs to correct the problem to some extent. My mill has plastic guides for the moving burr, making such adjustment impossible.
